A New Chapter
A meant-to-be friendship.
Life stories often flow like mysteries. Chapters that have yet to be discovered. Sentences that end in question marks.
The pages of Brittney’s story turned with trepidation. Milestones marked with pain. At three, the sudden loss of vision in her left eye. Then, a string of surgeries. Finally, something good: the first year of high school.
She marched on the field with the school band, feeling the grass beneath her feet and viewing a blurry image of the cheering crowd—until that day in tenth grade when the curtain on her performance closed.
Sudden darkness. Independence lost.
“I struggled with not having independence and being alone,” Brittney says. “I was feeling really alone in the world. People didn’t understand what I was going through.”
The plot twist arrived in four confident paws. A new chapter brimming with hope: guide dog Hayley.
Best friend. Comforter. Guide.
“When Hayley walked through that door, all my fears faded away,” Brittney says. “I told myself, ‘Your life, a new chapter starts today.’ But not just a chapter—a whole new book.”
Brittney and Hayley venture into a new career at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. Hayley strolls the hallways with her own special badge, greeting everyone and accompanying Brittney throughout the day.
Brittney’s chin lifts as she clings to the harness, her fairytale in the palm of her hand.
“I now know that I’m worthy of the independence,” she says.
A story that began with terror now flows into magical moments. Monthly Disney World adventures send Hayley’s tail wagging as she hops on her favorite rides with her forever person. Streets of possibility and wonder come to life with each enchanting visit.
The pages of Brittney’s journey now turn with confidence and a thrill for what comes next.
