Teaching a Puppy its Name
Building Attention and Connection from Day One
Puppy training starts with a name. Learn how to build communication and positive association through one simple, powerful word—your puppy’s name.
Teaching your puppy their name is one of the first and most important building blocks in early dog training. A name isn’t just a label—it’s your pup’s cue that something good is coming: a treat, a cuddle, or a fun game. When used consistently and positively, your puppy’s name becomes a key tool to gain attention, start communication, and set the stage for future training success.
At Dogs Inc, raising the next generation of guide and service dogs takes heart, teamwork, and a lot of love. That’s why our incredible volunteer puppy raisers are so essential. These kindhearted individuals welcome a puppy into their home and help nurture their potential, laying the groundwork for a life of purpose and service.
To support our puppy raisers—and help anyone building a strong bond with their dog—we’ve created simple, effective training videos like the one shared here. Whether you’re raising a future guide dog or just want a better-behaved pup, these tips can help you start strong.
Why Your Puppy’s Name Matters
It’s important to make your puppy’s name feel like something worth listening to. From the very beginning, only use their name in positive situations. Avoid using it when you’re upset or when giving corrections. By keeping their name tied to happy, encouraging moments, your puppy will start to associate hearing it with good things. That emotional connection helps make training smoother and keeps your bond strong.
In our training approach, we often use the term “cue” rather than “command.” That’s because guide and service dogs don’t just follow orders—they think, decide, and respond with intelligence and empathy. A cue invites action, and our dogs learn to respond thoughtfully.
Teaching Name Recognition
Name recognition should be one of the first training activities you do together. Once your pup understands a marker word like “yes,” you’re ready to start. During those early weeks, say their name and watch for them to look your way. When they do, mark it with “yes” and follow up with praise and a treat. Keep practicing, especially when your puppy is distracted. That helps them learn that checking in with you pays off.
Practice with People and Distractions
To help solidify this skill, try practicing with others. Gather friends or family and take turns saying your puppy’s name. Reward them each time they respond correctly. This helps your puppy stay focused even when there are distractions around. Just be sure everyone is using the same positive tone and reinforcing with praise or treats—it’s all about consistency.
Picking a name that’s fun, clear, and easy for your pup to hear can set you both up for success. With regular practice and positive reinforcement, your puppy will learn to love their name—and respond to it with joy and attention every time. This small but powerful skill can help build trust, focus, and better communication that lasts a lifetime.
