Ask the Vet: Dog Hair, We Care! Bathing and Brushing Basics
We asked our staff veterinarian, “How often should dogs be bathed and brushed? Here’s what Dr. Conrad had to say.
“Keeping your dog clean and well groomed keeps him healthy and handsome. Unless directed by your veterinarian, dogs should be bathed no more than once a month. Bathing too often can cause dry skin and skin flakes. Mild dog shampoos are readily available. Do not use human shampoo on dogs, as it can be too harsh. Brushing maintains a healthy, shiny coat and helps you form a close bond. Brush regularly, make it enjoyable, and try to brush him when he is relaxed, such as after exercise.”
