5 Paws-itivly Dog-Friendly New Year’s Resolutions
As the new year rings in, it’s time to create your list of New Year’s resolutions, but don’t forget your dog! Consider these five simple ideas to include your dog in this year’s resolutions.
- Update your pet ID info. Over the course of a year, a lot can change. People move, change phone numbers, or even get married and change names. People often forget to update their pet ID information after these events. One of the most important things you can do for your dog’s safety is to make sure their microchip information and dog tags are up-to-date. This can be as easy as visiting your local pet store for new tags. Just make sure to take Fido along so he can pick out a new toy for being such a good boy.
- Teach an old dog new tricks. Our working dogs are constantly learning, from new routes with their visually impaired handlers to new tasks for their veterans. Consider working with your family pets to practice tricks they already know or to teach them a new one to keep their minds fresh. Treat-dispensing puzzles are a great way to keep your dog focused and working with one mission in mind – treats!
- Speaking of treats, measure your pet’s food, every time. Many humans make it a New Year’s resolution to watch what they eat, and it’s important for your dog, too. Preventing dog obesity is critical for your dog’s overall health and lifestyle, and you can start by making sure they’re getting the proper amount of food. Most dog food brands have a recommended feeding amount, but if you have questions, you can always ask your veterinarian.
- Make cardio fun again. With the New Year, many of us want to work out more, and what better motivator than your dog’s wagging tail when you pick up their leash? Going out for a nightly walk is a great opportunity to get started. Dogs aren’t too picky when it comes to play time—that is, exercise—they just love hanging out with you! Time together can help reduce stress for you both.
